CLASSICAL CIVILISATION
A LEVEL
Year 12
Students follow the OCR Classical Civilisation AS and study two units.
- Component 11: The world of the Hero. Students study the Odyssey and its context with Mr Owen at BWS and The Aeneid and its context with Mrs Imms at SWGS.
- This unit comprises of both cultural analysis as well as literary appreciation. Assessed by a 2hr and 20 minute exam and this comprises 40% of the A level.
Year 13
Students study a further two examined units, one from a selection of components in group 2 and one from group 3.
- Group 2: Greek theatre; Imperial image; Invention of the barbarian; Greek art – currently we are looking at Imperial Image which examines the rise and rule of the emperor Augustus. 1 hr 45 min exam
- Group 3: Greek religion; Love and relationships; Politics of the Late Republic; Democracy and the Athenians. 1 hr 45 min exam.
OTHER INFORMATION
Students will have the opportunity to visit the British Museum in London.
Students will also have the opportunity to attend a trip Rome where we explore a variety of key sites which will enable them to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the Roman world and its material culture.
A selection of lectures are hosted at both BWS and at South Wilts each year on a variety of classical topics.
